For nearly 500 years, European explorers sought a route to the Orient through an elusive Arctic waterway called the Northwest Passaage. Stretching 3500 miles from Alaska to Baffin Island in eastern Canada, this dangerous, ice-blocked Passage wasn't traversed until the early 1900's. Today, fewer than 50 ships have ever crossed the Northwest Passage.

National Geographic Magazine sent photographer Richard Olsenius on an assignment to explore the land and people along this vast stretch of Arctic wilderness. For nearly a year, Olsenius traveled with Inuit hunters, explored the land with geologists, wildlife researchers and archaeologists and sailed on the first American yacht to transit the Northwest Passage.
