 For nearly 500 years, European explorers sought a route to the Orient through an elusive Arctic waterway called the Northwest Passaage. Stretching 3500 miles from Alaska to Baffin Island in eastern Canada, this dangerous, ice-blocked Passage wasn't traversed until the early 1900's. Today, fewer than 50 ships have ever crossed the Northwest Passage. |
National Geographic Magazine sent photographer Richard Olsenius on an assignment to explore the land and people along this vast stretch of Arctic wilderness. For nearly a year, Olsenius traveled with Inuit hunters, explored the land with geologists, wildlife researchers and archaeologists and sailed on the first American yacht to transit the Northwest Passage.
